Jane Cowan is an artist and craftswoman who has extensive experience of working with stone and sculpture over the last thirty years. Jane started her journey as a stone and sculpture conservator, working for a number of years at Lincoln Cathedral, where, after some time away, she now holds the position of Head of Conservation.
An introduction to carving in the 1990s led to an apprenticeship and enduring working relationship with distinguished letter carver John Shaw. Some twenty years on, Jane is based in the beautiful Lincolnshire countryside, where being close to the land and seasons has engendered a deep love of nature. This provides the inspiration for the drawings and words which she carves.
Celebrating the craft of the process as much as the finished object, Jane aims to make unique, beautiful, enduring and sometimes functional objects for inside and out. She specialises in using British stones, slates and reclaimed and salvaged pieces. She has carving work in cathedrals, churches, schools and private collections across the country and lectures on carving for the Cathedral Workshop Fellowship Programme.
