Welcome to May’s newsletter. The weather is beautiful, but so far I’ve found best viewed from inside as the northeasterly wind is keeping temperatures well down for the time of year, and my thermals are still firmly in place in the workshop!

Meanwhile, I have been gathering a few final pieces of limestone from Lincoln Cathedral Quarry. The quarry – located only a mile north of the Cathedral – has just shut, and having been in the hands of the Dean and Chapter since Victorian times will now be sold. Lincoln Limestone is an exceptionally beautiful oolitic limestone – soft to cut with attractive silver shells, incredibly durable and with the ability for the surface to become a deep ochre colour over the years. I’m fortunate to now have a few pieces in my store for future projects. Meanwhile, the search continues at the Cathedral for a new source of local stone.
Carving in the workshop has included preparation for a large project coming at the end of this month – delayed since before Christmas, mainly due to COVID issues affecting the main site. I can’t say too much yet, but it will mean heads down for much of the summer and early autumn.
Fingers crossed as life begins to open up again, I will be hoping to be one of the artists and craftspeople participating in an exhibition with Art On The Map at NT Gunby Hall at the end of May/early June. Gunby is a C.1700 country house with the most beautiful gardens, set at the foot of the Lincolnshire Wolds and close to the coast. There is also a nice little tea shop, so perfect for an afternoon out. Tickets to visit Gunby need to be booked on-line in advance.
